Myton Road, Warwick

Brief

This 1930s family home on Myton Road presented a typical rectangular plot with mature borders of trees, shrubs and geraniums. Lots of geraniums. The garden had been cared for through the years, but it’s fair to say it was writing its own script.

The dated pre-cast concrete patio was dingy, while the ramshackle kit pergola was being held up the wisteria it was intended to support. The clients wanted to make the most of their afternoon sun by revamping the existing patio with light, large format porcelain and the addition of a generous Millboard sundeck. A dining terrace deeper into the garden; plenty of play space for the kids, a growing zone and a good sized lawn were all key requirements. Three 2M x 1M corten steel raised beds combine geometric form with a fun, practical space to grow herbs, cutting flowers and vegetables with the kids. The clients were over the moon with the finished space.

After Shots

The black larch pergola provides robust support for the mature wisteria while creating intrigue and a new dimension to the space.
The children (or adults) can also attach a swing to the frame for hours of summer fun
Painting the boundaries black may seem a brave choice, but it has the effect of knocking the mismatched fences back and bringing in the surrounding landscape. Any foliage before the fence, such as the golden Phyllostachys bamboo or pleached Apple tree here really pop against the darker background. We notice the plants, not the boundary, which has the effect of making the space feel much larger than it really is.
